銀河鉄道の乗客がみなさみしいのは、ジョバンニを除いて、誰も片道切符しか持っていないからだ。
本作では、カムパネルラの目から、銀河鉄道の旅を辿り直す。
すると、そこに現れるのは、これまで妹トシに隠れて見えてこなかった、賢治の秘められた恋だ。医師と結婚してアメリカに渡り、異国で早逝した恋人への強い思いがあったのだ。
いつしか物語には賢治自身もあらわれ、少年と対話する。
メビウスの帯の、裏と表のように、けっして交わらない。でも、すぐ近くにいる存在。それがジョバンニとカムパネルラの旅なのだ。
